Monday, the City of Anacortes and First Forty Feet presented the final Downtown Streetscapes Plan to the Anacortes City Council—and we’re pretty excited about where we landed.
Over the past year, this project has asked a simple question: What would make a great Downtown Anacortes even better?
The answers came from people throughout our community. Through open houses, surveys, conversations, and lots of ideas, we heard what people love about Downtown Anacortes, what could work better, and what would make them want to spend even more time here.
The result isn’t one enormous, expensive project. It’s a practical collection of ideas—safer and more welcoming intersections, better gathering places, lighting, public art and play, façade improvements, parklets, stronger walking and biking connections, and more. Some are projects the City can take on. Some are a great fit for the Downtown Anacortes Alliance. Others can happen through partners like the Anacortes Creative District, local businesses and property owners, or community volunteers.
That’s one of the things we love most about this plan: a lot of it is achievable. We don’t have to wait for one giant construction project to make Downtown better. We can keep improving it project by project, block by block, building on what already makes Downtown Anacortes such a special place.
We’re incredibly proud of the community input that shaped this work, grateful to the City of Anacortes for funding and leading the planning process, and thankful to First Forty Feet for helping turn so many ideas into a roadmap we can actually use.
Now comes the really fun part: making it happen.
