A huge thank you, once again, to our incredible volunteers and the team at Ace Hardware, as well as our partners at the City of Anacortes Parks Department and Channel View Farms for making our town beautiful. The extraordinary planter arrangements were designed by Carole Star and Sally at Ace Hardware before Mother’s Day, and the hanging planters were provided by Sandy at Channel View Farms.
Our volunteer team met up at Ace Hardware to distribute flowers on May 2nd, and everyone had a blast planting up and down Commercial, which meant Anacortes was able to have bright color just in time for Mother’s Day. Chris and Ward MacKenzie outfitted their truck, Sparky, to perform watering in the month of May, in advance of the Parks Department supporting watering through the summer season. Due to everyone chipping in, we have been able to enjoy the planters for this extended season.
On May 20th, Channel View Farms delivered the beloved hanging baskets, volunteers distributed the baskets from their truck, and the Parks Department brought out ladders to hang the baskets. This year’s special addition is the fact that the hanging baskets have mint added to them, which you may be able to smell if you walk by!
Overall we planted 35 ground-level planters with 357 new plants and put up about 100 hanging baskets.
We’d especially like to express our gratitude for funding for this project from the City of Anacortes, and the Anacortes Rotary as part of their Pollinator Highway Project as part of their ECO Action Committee led by Jackie Davison. Thank you!!!
And one more note of appreciation for the continuing work it takes to keep these planters gorgeous: DAA volunteers are continuing to maintain the planters by deadheading, weeding, and cleaning the planters, and the Parks Department is watering both hanging and ground-level planters daily!
