Downtown Anacortes continued to bloom this quarter—literally and figuratively. From vibrant planters to new programs that strengthen our community, Q3 was full of progress and collaboration.

Here are a few highlights:
🌼 Beautification and Design
Our volunteer Planter Patrol kept downtown in full color all summer long, and we launched our new Façade Grant Program to help downtown building and business owners invest in exterior improvements. The City of Anacortes began work on the Downtown Streetscape Plan with First Forty Feet—a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the look and feel of our historic downtown.
💡 Economic Vitality
Students from the Black Box Robotics Team piloted a new way to track downtown foot traffic—data that will help our merchants and planners understand when and how people visit. We also presented the results of our Downtown Consumer Survey, revealing what locals value most: walkability, the arts, and more everyday options.
🛍️ Promotion and Events
We mailed over 8,000 Local’s Passes to households across Anacortes, putting a 10% thank-you discount directly in the hands of our community. Planning is underway for Elves Night Out and our first DAA-led Downtown Trick-or-Treat, carrying on favorite traditions that bring thousands downtown.
🤝 Community & Volunteers
In Q3, 36 volunteers contributed 589 hours—valued at over $23,000—to keep downtown welcoming and beautiful. We also welcomed Paelle Powell, our new Community Outreach Manager, who’s helping lead this volunteer-powered work forward.
📈 Downtown By the Numbers
- 241 active downtown businesses (including 40 nonprofits)
- 9 private investment projects totaling over $63,000
- 10% boost in foot traffic during the first week of the Local’s Pass
Together with our city partners, local businesses, and amazing volunteers, we’re cultivating a thriving, people-first downtown.
